EXAMPLE OF WHAT MAY HAPPEN IN NIGERIA: ISRAEL BOMBS SEVERAL TARGETS IN GAZA IN RESPONSE TO ROCKET FIRE
Israel has bombed dozens of targets in Gaza after being hit
by rockets from the region. Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, an Israeli military
spokesman, confirmed they had hit 80 sites, including training camps, weapons
storage facilities and a Hamas security headquarters building. Authorities also
confirmed a hospital had been damaged in northern Gaza but there were no
reports of injuries on either side.
Israel has threatened to expand its strikes to Iranian forces in Syria, which
could lead to a confrontation with Iranian and Hezbollah fighters. It blames
Iran for orchestrating the rocket attacks against Israel, which were carried
out by Islamic Jihad. Israel’s Iron Dome rocket-defence system intercepted 13
rockets, two landed in Gaza and the remainder fell in open spaces in southern
Israel, according to Conricus. Iran has sent its forces, along with those of
Hezbollah and other Shiite militias, to Syria to back President Bashar Assad in
the civil war there.
Islamic Jihad initially said it was ready to stop the rocket attacks if Israel
stopped airstrikes but its armed wing later threatened to continue the assault.
Although Islamic Jihad often acts independently of Hamas, Israel holds Hamas,
which has ruled the Palestinian territory of Gaza since 2007, responsible for all
fire emanating from the territory. The fighting came after a bloody day of
border protests Friday in which Israeli forces shot and killed four
Palestinians protesting along the perimeter fence between Gaza and Israel. Any
potential fighting between Israel and Iranian forces in Syria would be further
complicated by the involvement of Russia, which has backed the Syrian regime in
the civil war.
