Could Antonio Conte replace Jose Mourinho as manager?

Manchester United manager Mourinho is under increasing pressure at Old Trafford after just two games of the Premier League season.

A defeat to Brighton last weekend sees them already three points behind title rivals Manchester City.

Mourinho has cut a frustrated figure at United all summer and failed to land all but two of his top transfer targets.

Reports emerged earlier this month claiming Zinedine Zidane could replace the Portuguese if he is given the boot.

And while Zidane is still favourite to succeed Mourinho at Manchester United, Conte is also supposedly in the running.

According to bookmakers PaddyPower, Conte has moved from 14/1 to take over at Old Trafford to just 5/1.

Conte was axed by Chelsea earlier this summer after two years with the Blues.

He won the Premier League in his first campaign and the FA Cup last term.

But the Blues moves to get rid of Conte when realising Maurizio Sarri was available from Napoli.

The Conte separation package is expected to cost Chelsea £9m, while Napoli wanted around £5m to release Sarri from the final year of the Italian’s contract.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is 6/1 to replace Mourinho at Old Trafford, although Spurs will battle hard to keep the Argentine in north London.

Carlo Ancelotti is 14/1 despite recently replacing Sarri at Napoli, while Ryan Giggs is also paced at 14/1 having left the club when Mourinho took charge in 2016.

Spokesman Paddy Power said: “We’ve been inundated with bets on Antonio Conte to Man United all day, and have been forced to butcher the odds on him taking over from his arch-nemesis.

“We’re sure that he’d love the opportunity to show Jose up, plus, it’s gotta be better than sitting around in your pants all day and watching Jeremy Kyle.”
